On this day – 9th of September – 2008 The Large Hadron Collider was powered on
The Large Hadron Collider is a project built by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research. The project started in 1998 and was finished in 2008. Over 10000 scientist and engineers has been involved in the project. With a budget of 7.5 billion € it is one of the most expensive scientific projects in history. Physicist hopes the Large Hadron Collider will provide answers to fundamental questions of the basic laws for interactions and forces among the elementary elements. This might answer questions such as what is the nature of dark matter that accounts for 27% of the mass of the universe.
