On this day - July 21st 1831 -Leopold I became the first King of Belgium
Leopold I was a German who became the first king of Belgium after the country gained its independence in 1830. He reigned until December 1861. He had previous been asked to become the king of Greece, but declined. He was a wanted king for several countries due to his diplomatic connections to other royal families in Europe. Leopold I was crowned on this day in 1831 and the day is known as the Belgian national day today. He died in 1865 and his son, Leopold II took over as the King of Belgium.

On this day - March 25th 1306 - Robert the Bruce became King of the Scots
Robert the Bruce reigned from 1306 and until his death in 1329. He was crowned as the king after inheriting the right to the throne from his dad, and after killing Cromyn, his greatest opponent. He was known as a warrior and led Scotland in its first War of independence, where his troops won several fights against the English. Robert the Bruce's fighting led to the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton in 1328, where Scotland gained independence.
Robert the Bruce is remembered as a national hero in Scotland today. He supported William Wallace in his fights against England, and he is therefore portrayed in the movie Braveheart.

On this day – October 25th 1760 – became George III king of UK
George III was king of UK and Ireland until his death in 1820. His reign was longer than any UK monarch before him and only Victoria and Elisabeth II has ruled longer than him . George was then the king both during the Napoleon war and the American war of independence. George III struggled in his later years with dementia and rheumatics and by 1810 he was virtually blind. The Prince of Wales was the Regent from 1811 until George III death in 1820. George III was succeeded by George IV who only ruled for the next 10 years.
