Henry Hale Bliss, an American born in 1830, became the first American to die in a car accident. An electric taxi vehicle hit him as he was stepping out of his own car, and he died of the injuries the next day. He was struck by the car and run over with two of the cars wheels, leaving his chest and head crushed. The driver was charged with manslaughter, but the charges was later dropped.
