May 26th

On this day - May 26th 1897 - Bram Stokers "Dracula" was published 

Irish Author Bram Stokers was the first to introduce the vampire Dracula in his novel with the same name. The novel was horror story about Dracula who tried to move from Transylvania to England to find new blood. Bram Stokers spent year researching European folklore and stories about vampires before he published his story. Vampires was not invented by Stokers, but he defined the modern version of them and count Dracula has been the inspiration for countless modern stories about vampires. The novel was modestly popular when it was published, and it wasn't until the 20th century that the character gained the cult-status it has today.
